Taylor Jillian Altman
Girl with a Red Hat
I kissed them in another life, those lips
now glossy red, the color of her wine.
She swirls the Zinfandel around and sips
a bit, a subtle but suggestive sign.
I'm flattered by her sidelong glance, her eyes
half-hidden underneath the feathered brim
of her red hat. Contentedly, she sighs.
The sunlight on her heart-shaped face grows dim.
I'm certain that our paths have crossed before,
if not at this hotel, then in the park,
or maybe buying groceries at the store.
Except for where we sit, the room is dark.
She takes her purse and rises from her chair,
a person I don't know from anywhere.
Small Office
In an office on the corner of Le Monde,
where peroxide lights turn pretty brunettes blonde,
identical associates write briefs
and lock away in drawers their private griefs.
Midafternoon they gather at the cooler.
Precisely as a Mandelbrot or Euler,
they measure time in tiny paper cones
and happiness in ringing of the phones.
With cigarettes attached to lower lips,
they pace in meetings, make required quips.
At five, they casually undo the years
with extra-dry martinis, sometimes beers.

Alice Mizrachi: Growing up in New York, I have been immersed in a culture that is constantly growing. Throughout my work you can feel the influence the city has had on me, the never-ending desire to grow and flow. One common thread in my work is the texture--rhythm and layers. I love to incorporate tactile surfaces that compel the audience to approach and feel it. Timeless and universal, my images evoke a raw feminine energy that leaves you feeling nurtured. My art is a vehicle to express to the world my journey as a NYC female artist in the past, present and future. I am logging my time here. After completing a residency in Paris during 2010, I am focusing on residencies in other cities with the intention of spreading my art globally. | |
