Garsenda, Countess of Forcalquier (Garsenda de Proensa)
by Maryann Corbett

o
arsenda, countess of Forcalquier and of Provence, was an aristocratic patron of the troubadours. Probably during her tenure as regent for her son, she became the focus of a literary circle involving several poets, possibly including Gui de Cavaillon and Elias de Barjols. The troubadour Raimon Vidal praises her patronage.

Because of her high position, Garsenda’s life is better attested than many of the other trobairitz, but we still know relatively little about her work. One poem is attributed to her alone, as well as half of a debate poem between a lady and a knight. For more information about the trobairitz, see the entry for the Countess of Dia.

Dates given are approximate.
