Maria de Ventadorn
by Maryann Corbett

o
aria de Ventadorn was an aristocratic supporter of the troubadours of 12th-century Occitania and a poet in her own right. Other members of her family were also known for their patronage of well-known poets of the time. Her patronage is celebrated in the work of several other troubadours, including Bertran de Born. Her one surviving work is dated 1197. Her poem is structured as a debate between herself and the troubadour Guy d’ Ussel. Although Maria’s life is better documented than that of other women troubadours, we still know little about her with certainty. For more information about the trobairitz, see the Timeline entry for the Countess of Dia.

Dates given are approximate.
